Wandering through the Newly built Library today I went on a typical hoarding spree and picked up as many leaflets as I could for further reading at home.
One of them caught my eye, with the title 'Zhe: [noun] undefined'. I thought back to learning about the one of many confusing gender neutral terms but thought, 'No, it must be another word, maybe another language.' And shoved it in my bag.
Imagine my surprise when I pick it up and read words that seem to resonate in so many different areas of my life;

Imagine my surprise when I pick it up and read words that seem to resonate in so many different areas of my life;
I've had a lifetime of people thinking I am who I am not.
Such a simple sentence, but it was so powerful. I looked over the leaflet to read the rather ambiguous description of a 'Timely, courageous, imaginative... narrative story-telling' about Identity. But I'd already gathered it'd be just the sort of thing I'd want to see.
I'm really excited to see this, the word, the gender-neutral noun that so many crave to be recognised but have forgotten or ignored time and time again is getting out into the public a little bit more. In such a massive library, in the City Centre too!
Quite literally, Zhe, is a noun that is gender neutral, neither male nor female. And this is exactly the identity of many in society, they are neither male nor female, regardless of their privates, regardless of who they love. Your identity is something so sacred and personal, to have it rejected is an extremely powerful way to make a person feel worthless, and it's really empowering to see this being opened up and received. So I guess I could say I feel a bit of unjustified pride in this managing to happen. And definitely need to go see it myself!
This play is on a National Tour during Autumn 2013. See below for a trailer and tour dates.
