How is it being celebrated where you are?
Tomorrow it's 3rd December; the worldwide celebration of International Day of Persons with Disabilities! So what are they doing where you live to celebrate this?
What is International Day of Persons with Disabilities?
The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed that 3 December be observed every year as the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. The Day was initially proclaimed to commemorate the anniversary of the General Assembly's adoption of the World Programme of Action concerning Persons with Disabilities to promote understanding about disability issues and to increase awareness of gains to be derived from the integration of disabled persons in every aspect of political, social economic and cultural life.

- See what was done globally on 3rd December, 2011; "Together for a better world for all: Including persons with disabilities in development''.
- 2012's years theme of the day was 'Removing barriers to create an inclusive and accessible society for all'.
- Last years day also coincided with the Workfare Schemes, which could force disabled people to work unpaid work with no restrictions on length of stay in set roles.
Aims
International Day of Persons with Disabilities draws awareness to people with disabilities and the problems they face in their everyday lives. It's estimated that disabled people make up 10% of the worldwide population; 80% living in developing countries.
But, even where disability laws are in place, its effectiveness can be held back by negative attitudes and stigma towards disabilities.
Because so many types of disabilities exist, understanding them all individually can be a difficult task. Especially for rare conditions or invisible illnesses.
The Paralympics are a great example of how disabled people can show off their talents to the rest of the world. For more information on disability rights and disability aid visit the International Day of Persons with Disabilities website.

The English Federation of Disability Sport (EFDS) will be releasing a much awaited guide to improve access for disabled people in sports clubs.
“Access for all: Opening Doors” aims to break down one of the main barriers for people with a range of impairments; venue accessibility. EFDS has worked with an access consultant to produce a user-friendly guide, with the aim to ensure more disabled people can enjoy being active in more places.
EFDS is also promoting opportunities available to disabled people across the country.
They will be using the hashtag #DoorsToActivity and have also set up a Thunderclap for people to support during the week. You can support it by clicking this link https://www.thunderclap.it/projects/7071-doors-to-activity. EFDS hope sport, fitness and other providers will promote their opportunities for disabled people. For full information go to their website here.
