Wheelchair and scooter users on public transport
The majority of wheelchair users will be able to travel on accessible public transport. Where services are stated as being accessible, this implies that access is possible for persons using wheelchairs conforming to international Standard ISO 7193, which is a maximum length of 1200mm (47inches) and maximum width of 700mm (27.5 inches).
Scooters are not allowed on local bus services or the Metro because of scooter design, difficulty in manoeuvring and unsuitability for use in a vehicle. Operators are not legally required to let you travel in a scooter, or if it is believed that your wheelchair is not in safe condition.
Scooters are allowed on the London Midland services as long as they're a max of 1,000mm and max width 700mm. The max combined weight of scooter and user is 239kg (36.2 stone), and the scooter must be a sealed battery should be switched off once on the train. It should also be possible to fold the scooter down to a reasonable size and be portable.
Travel can be booked (24 hours in advanced) by calling JourneyCare on 0870 609 6060. This is voice activated, and you should say 'Assisted Travel', when prompted to do so.
However, if you need assistance on the day of travel, you can arrive at any station and request immediate assistance from the staff there. It might take a while to receive it, but they'll do their best to accommodate you.
